The SOAP Method of Bible Study

For three weeks, our church is studying the book of James, using the SOAP method.  This is an inductive study tool to help us not only read the Bible but also apply it.  This is how to meditate on a passage using SOAP:

 S. ScriptureRead the scripture you have chosen for the day or that period what ever you are doing.  Take your time and really read not skim.  Pick out verses that speak to you or ones you would like to dig deeper into.

O. Observe – Think about what you have read.  What is this passage of scripture about? What is the sin or the need that it is addressing? How would you explain the Scripture if you were teaching it to someone else? Check out any Scripture references and read them and write them in your own words.

A. How does it Apply –  Ask yourself three questions:

  1. What did you learn about God?
  2. What did you learn about yourself?
  3. What did you learn about life?

P. PrayPray for God to give you understanding of how He wants to use this Scripture in your heart and life. Ask Him to help you to hear and understand His Holy Word. Pause and listen!!! Ask Him to give you direction for the day, for the week, for your life. “Speak Lord! Your servant is listening!”
